Every few days I overwrite a backup to my own folder as...
~/BACKUPS/Checkbook/Accounts.plist

But, as I become more Mac savvy, I've noticed a folder named...
~/Library/Checkbook/Backups

and there are quite a few backup files in there, e.g...
Accounts_6_18_2005_1.4.Z
Accounts_6_25_2005_1.4.plist.Z
.
.
Accounts_8_5_2005_1.4.plist.Z
Accounts_8_12_2005_1.4.plist.Z
Accounts_8_12_2005_Before_1.5.plist.Z

How did they get there and should I be using a different statergy?

P.S. Will a future version make use of CoreData?

Good question!

You've found CheckBook's automatic backups folder. Every seven days or so CheckBook will automatically create a backup of your Accounts.plist, compress it and store it in /Users/[your username here]/Library/CheckBook/Backups/. CheckBook will also create a backup when it finds you have just launched a newer version of CheckBook, allowing you to revert to an older version of CheckBook, if necessary.

We see CoreData is an option for future versions of CheckBook and other projects we are planning. It would restrict CheckBook to Mac OS X 10.4 or later, so we do not have plans to use it in the immediate future.

For a moment, my heart stopped till I read again your answer on CoreData and 10.4. I had thought you might be going down the Windows road! What a relief.

Windows is definitely not an option. If you cut us we bleed all six colors. Of course, Splasm Greenâ„¢ is the most prominent.

Quick question, what's the difference between backing up and selecting save changes from the file menu? Also, what is the most bomb-proof method of backup? Should I just manually backup every time I make changes, or does save changes accomplish this? Thanks for your help!

Backup Accounts will create a complete copy of your current Accounts. You pick where to save it. Save Changes tells CheckBook to save the current session's changes immediately instead of waiting until you quit. This comes in handy if you know you're about to try something...interesting...with CheckBook. It's also useful if you have developed Twitchy Save Finger or have reason to suspect your Mac is about to crash.

The best way to backup is to use the File menu's Backup Accounts option and save to another Mac, secure online storage or a removable disk. You could also backup the /Users/[your username here]/Library/CheckBook/ folder periodically, which gives you access to the automatic weekly backups.

CheckBook can't directly import the backup file but will work fine if the file is placed in the right location in your home folder. Here's what to do:

First, make sure CheckBook is not running. Go to /Users/[your username here]/Library/CheckBook/ and rename Accounts.plist to Accounts.plist.old. Then, copy your backup to the same folder and rename the copy to Accounts.plist. It's best to copy your backup because you want to protect it from any mishaps during the restoration process. Launch CheckBook and verify your data appears as you expect. If everything shows up correctly, you can safely remove the Accounts.plist.old file.

I'd like to see it easier:
File>Open Archive...>(select archive)

I'm pretty clumsy and sometimes I screw up badly. A method of fast retrieval would help me, at least. I think the current method of using the backups is cumbersome.
