Hi,
I've read, that the sounds for finishing a job are curr. not available in Audiobook Builder. Ok, I can wait for it.

BUT...since I use version 1.1.1, the time for building an Audiobook increased - it takes soooooo long. Much longer than in version 1.0.11 to which I now downgraded. I'm using an iMac 2,4 Ghz Dual Core.
Is it an issue which is well known that time? When will it be fixed?
sincerly yours

Oh, no answer yet? No one who has this problem?
Today I made another try:
97 mp3 files (totally 11 hrs 42 min playtime) combining to an audiobook with Audiobook Builder 1.1.1 took 1 hour on a iMac Intel 2,4 Ghz.
The same work on the same iMac with Audiobook Builder 1.0.11 took only 33 minutes!!!
When installing the newer / older version of A. B. I deleted the pref files.
Where is the mistake? Am I doing anything wrong or is it an issue in A. B.
Please help me!

1.1 and later do build in a somewhat different way that actually increases performance - though almost all of that extra speed is burned off in things like giving up processor time for VoiceOver and some issues specific to handling the longer build lengths that 1.1.x supports. So, in our tests today, using your basic specs, the build times for 1.0.11 and 1.1.1 were pretty similar. Now we're wondering if there's a factor specific to your Mac that might underly the performance issue there. It would help greatly if you could create a System Profiler report and send it to us. You can create one of these reports by launching /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler.app and selecting Save from the File menu. Send it over to support@splasm.com and we'll take a look.

I have to say that I too have the same problem. Builds are now at least double (more like tripple) the time it once took to output audiobooks. Hours and Hours.

I'm going to see if deleting my preferences work, but it's a long shot.

Thank you for your info!
If one don't hear the same problem from others, you could think that you're too silly to use the program. Hope someone will find a solution better than downgrading.
The support told me it could be the fragmented Memory of an Mac. I tried to use audiobook builder with a newly started Mac and the problem was a little better.
I think the increase of time is growing with the playtime of the audiofiles you are joining.
sincerly yours

What we've found is that the new build process takes up significantly more memory than in previous versions. We will reduce the memory requirement by about a third in the next minor update to Audiobook Builder.

Flower reported via email that the build time was 2 minutes longer with 1.1.1 vs. 1.0.11 after a fresh restart. That's a serious improvement over double or triple time and within what we would consider a typical variance - especially for a 12-hour Project - between builds given variables outside of Audiobook Builder's control during the course of any build. Ben, would you give it a try after a fresh restart and see how things go?

Strangely, deleting both the preferences and the Application support sped everything up! Not sure how that worked, but it did. I will try outputting a few more and see what I get.

That fits. Restarting is a brute force method of defragmenting memory - but just tooling around in other applications, quitting them or opening and closing windows can also free up large blocks of memory and allow Audiobook Builder to perform as intended. If you run into a situation where Audiobook Builder isn't performing take a look at your free memory in Activity Monitor and let us know that number, the length of, number of files in and audio output format for your Project and how long it's been building so we can sanity check.

Ok, had the same problem again this is the only difference I could make out:

Two books basically 7:45 hours

One made from mp3(vbr) originals, one made from m4a(vbr) originals

mp3 - 31 minutes to convert
m4a- 4 hours to convert

So I am going to experiment to see what's going on. I'll let you know what happens. If there is anything I can do for you guys let me know. I will be compressing multiple books and seeing what happens.

Can you tell us the audio format you built to for each Project? That can make a dramatic difference in build time. It would also help us to know the number of files in each Project. Thanks Ben.

Ok, I will check out the two projects. The problem is persisting pretty hard core though. I will try to get all the information to you.

Same problem here.
New buyer/New user. So no legacy book builder on my iBook G4 1.42 Ghz 14"
I have a 1.25GB RAM.
The version i have (latest) takes about 3-5 hours to build an audio book of 35 or more mp3 files.
Converting to High quality.
Even in Normal quality, it takes the same time.
Where can i get the previous version if that's faster?

Hi anandcp,
as you could read, I've got same problem. meanwhile I found, that the timeincrease depends very much from the source-mp3.
Seems, that some vbr-mp3 causes that effect.
I am making more "experiments" to find out more and will let you all know - but could tak some time. please be patient :-)
all the best
