When I try to import tracks from an audiobook CD (rented from the public library), I get the following message:

I *can* import if I select the tracks in iTunes and click on Add iTunes in AB, but that defeats the purpose (and my $10) ...

Do you know if Z DRIVE is formatted as FAT or Mac OS Extended? You can check by highlighting the Z DRIVE icon in the Finder and selecting Get Info from the File menu, then examining the Format field toward the top of the Info window.

Audiobook Builder relies on QuickTime to import from CDs and QuickTime has serious issues when it comes to FAT volumes. -43 errors are almost a given. The workaround, for now, would be to create and build your Projects on your startup volume, which is bound to be formatted as Mac OS Extended. It should be moot when we implement the preference to use the home folder's Application Support folder for temporary file storage, as we already have in ViddyUp!, ensuring that all of QuickTime's temp files are stored on an almost-guaranteed Mac OS Extended volume.

I checked and you're right, the Z: drive (an external drive) is formatted as FAT, which would explain it. When I save to my Desktop instead there's no problem.

However I do seem to be having another, different import problem: sometimes when I click on "Import CD" (to the desktop), nothing happens, the "importing" pop-up notifier just hangs and no progress occurs. Sometimes I can work around it by highlighting the files in iTunes and importing that way, other times that solution doesn't work either. It's a multiple-CD audiobook I'm trying to import -- some of the CDs express this problem, others import with no problem at all. Is it AB, or the CD, do you think?

When Audiobook Builder hangs while importing from CD it usually turns out to be a damaged or smudged disc. Very occasionally it's the CD/DVD drive. iTunes is sometimes able to work around the issue with its error correction scheme. It sounds like that's the case there - it's only working sometimes. I would check the disc(s) and if they appear dirty you might clean them carefully (a soft cloth gently rubbed in a straight line from center hole to outer edge, like spokes on a wheel). If iTunes can't import them then I would go with the idea that the discs are damaged.
