Having used CheckBook Pro for several years now, I'm more than impressed with it's simplicity and ease of use. Overall it's an excellent app/program. My one and only suggestion, which I'm sure has been said before, would be for the balance font colors to reflect a positive or negative balance, i.e., green for positive and red for negative.

Please note that having fixed colours isn't a good idea for everybody. As somebody who has 'different' colour vision to the norm, I appreciate it when programmers provide me with the option of setting my own preferences. Programs which use colours such as red and green are often unusable for me.

Colour blindness

"Colour blindness affects a large number of individuals ... In individuals with Northern European ancestry, as many as 8 percent of men and 0.5 percent of women experience the common form of red-green colour blindness."

We've definitely got the request on our list for a running Balance column that fluctuates in color based on the amount. So, we'll be looking at adding that to a future release at some point.

Also, for the colored Balance feature, we'll definitely want to have options to select the colors used for the negative or positive values in the Preferences, much like with the current Deposit and Debit color selection options.

2015 and they still haven't made this change. Would seem like the simplest of things to do.

That would be excellent!

As much as I like seeing credits in green (it's kinda fun), I do prefer the balance in traditional black/red, particularly as sometimes a credit still doesn't take the running balance into the "black" territory

So I'd like to add my vote to this request please.

I just want to go on record as agreeing on setting +/- balance colors differently from the rest.

It would also be nice to have a debit/credit indication on a highlighted line. By the way, neat highlight effect in version 2.5! (I just updated today.)

The capability to show balance values in a color that differs from the overall row color should be in the next update, 2.6.

Also, the idea to include a debit/credit indicator for when an item is highlighted is a good one. That's something for the feature request list, that we can look at adding to a future version.

If seeing multiple colors in the balance column is a problem for you, a very simple workaround is as follows:
Open the account
Click View, click columns, remove the √ for Balance
Click the disclosure triangle, just left of the balance field on the bottom right
Select Today's Balance

Now when you are in the account there is no balance column with multiple colors to fret about. The account balance as of today displays at the bottom right. If it is a credit balance there will be a minus sign in front of the number.

Hi everyone!

Not sure if we've mentioned this on the forum, but you can get a look at screenshots of what balance coloring will look like in CheckBook 2.6 at http://www.splasmata.com/?p=3214. Colored balances will be the default - but we're including preferences to disable them for the "classic" look. Development on 2.6 should wrap this week, then it's on to testing, so it won't be long now :).

Looks great! Can't wait.

Though, isn't if "By Jove"? And not "By Jobs"?

Unless, of course, you mean Steve Jobs. In which case, never mind!

Keep up the good work.

Well, I've just upgraded to 2.6, and I must say: this is the silliest (and entirely useless) way to implement the balance colour option.

The balance colour choice should be separate. In fact, those of us who are out of kindergarten age, might prefer to see a traditional layout - all entries in black, positive balance in black, negative balance in red.

It's so simple - the positive balance is NOT the same as account credit entry (which you insist on calling a deposit), and the negative balance IS NOT the same as a debit entry.

So, for me to have a standard balance colours, I must have the ledger lit up like a Christmas tree (I don't know about you chaps, but most of my entires are debits - I can't have the entire page in RED)!

We've had the Red/Green entry colors for a while, and I have gotten used to it. I do appreciate the color coding for the account balances on the shelf. Perhaps there is a way to allow for entries to be in black, while the amount could be red/green depending debit/credit with account balance all red/green depending on negative/positive balance? :?:

Just a suggestion.

Keep up the great work, guys! :D
