Actually, I have solved this problem, or at least found a work-around, but I thought I would post this here in case someone else encounters a similar situation.

I was working on a project that involved joining a number of downloaded public-domain mp3s as chapters in a single audiobook. I had trouble with a few files that Audiobook Builder would not import, showing the error message “No audio in file.” I was mystified as the files in question would upload and play in other audio programs, such as Apple’s Music application.

The simple solution was to open each file in Fission, and “Save As” under the same file name. I replaced the original downloads with the “new” file and AB imported all the files satisfactorily.

Thank you for sharing that tip!

Stuff like Music or QuickTime Player can sometimes open and play a file that throws a wrench in things when it comes to editing the actual data. The media engines underneath, like Apple's AVFoundation, can let some things that're out of spec slide during playback, but they usually hold the data to a higher standard when you want to edit. Audiobook Builder needs to do a bit of both, so it can trip over a file here or there. It tends to happen when a file's been around the block, so to speak - when it's from a third party or created with a workflow that includes a little tinkering with the file's contents. Passing the audio data through to a new container file, like you did there with Fission, can be just the ticket.

If you have a spare minute, would you send over one of the files that led to the error? We'd love to test here to see if it's anything we can teach Audiobook Builder to work around, without using another tool, or at least find a better way of explaining the situation to folks. If you're game, shoot the smallest original MP3 over to support@splasm.com and we'll have a look. Thanks again!
