New user so I may be missing something but I bought from MacUpdate last week and I'm running under Leopard on an iMac CoreDuo.

I'm using ABB to convert to audiobook format for my 2G Touch. Today I've taken 11 MP3 files and converting them for iTunes has taken almost an hour. The source files were 172Mb and the output is in excess of 330Mb! Is doubling the size a typical result?

I appreciate that RAM etc makes a difference but whether I compare to say, WIreTap Studio or VisualHub, ABB is amazingly slow. VisualHub will convert a 350Mb video to Touch format in 15mins on my iMac.

Any tips on how to make this faster would be much appreciated.

The actual length of the files does matter in converting audio when re-encoding. Your 172 mb file could be several hours long, and is decompressed and then re-encoded.

It sounds like you are also upsampling your mp3, which is unnecessary. You can check your actual quality of your source material if you select a file in the chapters tab and click on the 'show details' area near the bottom. This will open a pane that tells you the quality of the file you have selected. You can then match the quality of your file by adjusting your build options. This will give you an AAC with approximately the same file size as the Mp3 version.

I hope this helps!

I promised to report so here we go.

I haven't been able to reproduce the doubling of file size that occurred with the first audiobook I attempted so that's a good thing! I've probably produced about 20 or more since the first post.

Speed: I understand the issue of unencoding and reencoding and just have to accept it is a lengthy slow process. Hopefully the next new Mac will speed this up but probably not by much I guess.

So count me in as a satisfied (impatient) user :D
