Post subject:  Genres in iTunes

Hi

I have a problem with my iTunes concerning the specific genres. In Podner, before encoding, I select a certain genre, but the final video won't show up in the right category in iTunes or on my iPod. Is there a way to fix this so for example TV-shows would show up as TV-shows in both my iTunes and on my iPod?

Unfortunately, no. Strangely, the Genre isn't involved with the way videos are organized on the iPod. It's the Video Kind in each video's Info in iTunes that needs to be adjusted. In our tests we were unable to come up with a viable solution to allow setting this value from Podner. Video Kind appears to be completely separate from the file itself, and iTunes does not expose an AppleScript interface to allow easy modification. While it is easy to locate and change the value on disk outside of iTunes, those changes are not immediately reflected in iTunes and will be overwritten when the user quits iTunes. So Genre is purely for organizing within iTunes and to organize by Video Kind users will need to modify Video Kind directly in iTunes. We're crossing our fingers that Apple will expose Video Kind via AppleScript in a future release of iTunes.

Have you looked into AtomicParsley? It's a CLI program for editing atoms of itunes files (including the TV Series atoms). It's open-source and available here. You might be able to get some pointers for how to go about adding the appropriate metadata.

Any updates?

There's a few GUI frontends to checkout:

We haven't moved on this feature yet, though it's still in our list of major items to implement. Lostify seems to have it under control, but we can see the value of having it all in one application. It's a question of rethinking some of Podner's interface to keep it simple. Keep an eye out and bump if you think we've forgotten you ;).
