Post subject:  My ipod is not recognizing my movie

I recently purchased Podner and followed the very simple instructions on how to use it. I dragged my mp4 into the little hat and went out to do a few things as I was told it would take 4 hours. Upon my return I saw that the movie was in itunes and could play in itunes, but when I tried to copy it to my ipod, I was told that the file wasn't recognized. Please help...

We're also tracking another user's report of the same symptom, and it's very possible both issues stem from the same root cause.

In general, Podner can create iPod-compatible files even when QuickTime Pro's Movie to iPod option can't, but not this time. Luckily, we've been able to capture a very short clip from the other user's file that will fail after Podner processes it. That will make it easier to quickly identify the root cause of the issue and resolve it so that it doesn't affect too many users. If at all possible, we would like the opportunity to test pre-release builds of Podner against your file to be sure we've got it working correctly for you, as well. Would you consider sending the file via a free, anonymous service like http://www.yousendit.com ? If so, please address the file to support@splasm.com. If not, would you be willing to try a pre-release build of Podner after we have it working correctly with the other user's file?

Thanks for getting back to me Keith. Since the file in qusetion is larger than 1 gig, I don't think I can send it to you via yousendit.com. I would be willing to try it on my computer though...

Post subject:  Same Problem is there a Fix?

Hi,

I just "may" have "ripped" my Robot Chicken DVD with the latest MTR, then I used Cinematize Pro to extract short clips from the VIDEO_TS folder. I saved them as uncompressed full quality QT files (with Cinematize Pro). Then I used Podner 1.7.1 to convert them for my iPod. We are talking about 15 and 18 MB files here. Not huge ones. iTunes and QT can play them, but iTunes won't sync them with the iPod. Odd thing is though that I created more Robot Chicken clips with the same software and process at the same time I made these two that don't want to sync. I'm sticking them on my iDisk for you to d/l if you'd care to look at them. I'll post one that did successfully sync too. The Voltron & Electric Mayhem are the "bad" ones. The Cylon file is one that will sync correctly.

Many thanks, Jim

Jim:

I took a look at all three files and found that the two that don't work correctly are showing up at 30.41 and 30.44 frames/second, which would prevent them from synchronizing with the iPod. The Cylon file is showing up at 29.98, just within spec. ViddyUp!'s presets should specify a cap of 30 frames/second to QuickTime but what we have here is either proof that one or the other - ViddyUp! or QuickTime - isn't getting that 30 frames/second setting right.

Would you mind sharing the smaller of the two original source clips so we can test the file directly here? How about an iChat file transfer? If that's a possibility message me directly at keithgugliotto and I'll pick up the file. Thanks Jim!

Post subject:  Thank you!

Keith,

Wow, that was fast! Thanks for taking the time to look at this issue. Unfortunately, I don't have the source clips. I've already deleted them since I assumed that I didn't need them (before I found the problem).

I could redo the process from scratch, but that probably wouldn't tell us much would it?

Is there anything I can do with the current files I have? Possibly reencode with ViddyUp? Yes, I realize it means a loss in quality, but I'm just trying to discover my ptions at this point.

Is there anything I can do w/o the source files that would be helpful to you?

Please advise.

Many thanks,

Jim

Jim:

I just ran both of the problem clips through ViddyUp!'s H.264/MultiPass/Best preset and they came out at 30 frames/second and worked fine on the iPod. That's probably your best bet.

Having the original clips here would have been a great way for us to observe where ViddyUp! and/or QuickTime are misbehaving. If you run into this again try to hang on to one of the source clips and send it over so we can take a look at it.

Post subject:  Ok, thank you very much!

I'll be sure to save the source material next time. Thank you for your help!
